Aniline leather is left untreated to emphasise its natural characteristics.

When it comes to natural, untreated leather, the clue is in the name. Natural leather, truly is natural. It has a rich heritage, with the history of the animal showing in every mark and grain of their hide. Marks and scars in leather are characteristic of an authentic leather hide. They can appear as veins, stretch marks, grain differences, inconsistency in the surface of the leather, brand marks, insect bites or raised scars with a lighter or darker shading. As the skin heals, the resulting scar tissue actually becomes much more dense and stronger than the surrounding skin. This means you don’t have to worry about imperfections in the natural hide being weak points in the leather - if anything they make the leather stronger and more durable.

All of these natural differences in the animal’s hide create a truly unique look that adds to the aesthetic appeal of your leather sofa. No 2 hides are ever the same. Your sofa can be covered in as many as 5 full hides, sewn together to create a stunning and truly unique piece of furniture. You should expect to see differences between each hide, and find that this adds to the natural beauty and unique nature of your leather sofa.

An aniline leather sofa needs to be cherished and invested in with specialist care treatments to keep it looking its best. This style of leather is much better suited to households with adults and older children - if you love the distressed look, this one’s for you.

Aniline leather is very easily scratched and marked, so it does need to be treated with care. Only the specially formulated products found in our leather care kits are suitable for use on your aniline leather sofa and any cleaning should always be followed with an application of protection cream. If you take the time to condition it twice a year and appreciate the natural beauty that comes with an untreated leather, you’ll enjoy the softness and luxury of your aniline sofa for years to come.

Important tip: To avoid water marks after cleaning we advise that you dampen a colourfast cloth with boiled water from a kettle and gently wipe the entire panel or cushion from seam to seam. This will help to prevent any water stains as the leather dries.
